Last Week of Flag Football

Tomorrow is a sad day, for it is the last day of Flag Football at Wayne Thomas.  Today was the last day for 3-5th graders, tomorrow is the last day for 1st and 2nd graders.  Thank you to Mr. I for such a fun season and endless energy this fall!  Let's hope he's up for it again next year :)

Winter/Spring Registration Is Open

Registration for Winter/Spring After School Activities is HERE!!  You can find the full schedule, pricing, registration guidelines and the registration form on the After School Activities Blog.  The full registration packet will also very soon be available for download from the Wayne Thomas PTA website.  You can also look for hardcopies of the registration packet in your children's backpacks early next week.

A few reminders:

• Registration will remain open thru December 21st.  Late enrollments will NOT be accepted.
• Enrollment in classes is on a first come basis.
• Confirmation of enrollments will be sent the first week of January.
• The winter/spring session runs from January 22 - May 17.
• Discounts are available on many of our classes for military families - please contact Lilah Shapiro or Mandy Castle for additional information.
• Be sure to turn in payment and permission slips with your registration form.

A popular science workshop offered once a week at Wayne Thomas. Children engage in exciting hands-on activities, watch spectacular demonstrations, join inquiry-based discussions, and make amazing take-homes like model rockets, periscopes, Mad Science putty and more. The Mad Science after-school program offers students a chance to see just how cool science can be.

MINDFUL PRACTICES YOGA

Mindful Practices' yoga, Hip-Hop Yoga and movement programs are exciting and innovative courses that combine movement, strength building, breathe work, journaling, and math and writing activities all into one session! Each class begins with a safe and fun yoga warm-up where students will learn many different poses and flow sequences and series, including Sun Rise Salutation. Students will also learn energizing AND calming breathing techniques that can be carried over into their daily lives, such as before tests! Along with the physical and wellness benefits of Yoga, this program also incorporates a math and literacy component into its curriculum. The long winter months can lead to boredom or restlessness. Alleviate creative dormancy with a fun-filled Young Rembrandts class! Mr. Iverson will facilitate favorite recreational games, appropriate for each grade level (1-5). Each week students select their school-time favorites such as Gaga, Air Raid, Noodle Tag, Steal the Pins, Scatterball, Battleship and sport related activities. BEADING & JEWELRY WITH ROS

Mondays (no class on 1/21, 2/18, 3/18, 3/25) Grades: 1-5.  We’ve got Ros Lotzof!!  Explore the wonderful creative process of bead weaving.  Students will have an opportunity to create wearable necklaces, bracelets, and watches, while spending time with their friends and making new ones. Students will also create a variety of beaded non-jewelry pieces. For example, in the winter, we make beaded snowflakes!  Students love taking their pieces home and sharing them with their family. This class is a great way for children to apply their learning skills in an artistic, creative way!  The class will use high-quality materials.  Class tuition includes materials and the finishing of all pieces.  Number of classes: 13; Cost: $234; Min# 5 / Max 10

GIRLS ON THE RUN

Tuesdays and Thursdays (no class on 3/19, 3/26, 3/28, 4/9, 4/23, 5/16) Students MUST commit to both days of the class.

Session dates – 12-week season from Mid-March through race day in early June – official session dates will be published as soon as it is announced by Girls on the Run Chicago

Girl Power!  Join girls across the country and participate in a 12-week program that combines a curriculum focusing on important issues such as self-esteem, healthy living and body image, and making positive choices, with physical fitness and training.  Students will work with 2 trained teacher coaches and participate in a culminating 5K run Chicago alongside girls from all GOTR programs from throughout the Chicago area.  You’ll feel great inside and out - plus you get some really cool race day goodies! Cost:  $195; Grades 3-5 Girls – Min # 8 / Max # 15

ACROFABULOUS CIRCUS CLASS

In an Acrofabulous Circus Class, students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of circus arts, which are often seen in professional circuses. The focus will be a balanced selection of the following subjects: Static Trapeze, Diablo, Spanish Web, Juggling, Silks/Aerial Fabric, Globe-Walking, Tumbling and Acrobatics, Plate Spinning, Fabric-Poi, and more! Each session will be unique, may possibly also include lessons in: Unicycle, Cloud Swing, Contortion, Rola Bola, Aerial Straps, Aerial Hoop/Lyra and Clowning. In selected classes, students will have the opportunity to show their loved ones the exciting new talents they have developed during the last class of the session. Hello!  We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  We had hoped to have the after school programs registration materials out during the holiday.  Unfortunately we had a little glitch which set us back a day or two.

Winter/Spring After School Session is Here!  The full schedule and registration materials for the winter/spring session of after school programming will be available on Friday - but we're giving you a little preview of the new programming.  The next session will run from January 22 thru May 17th.  Registration will open on November 26th and run thru December 21st.

We're thrilled to welcome back many of the great programs that we had last session - all of our returning vendors are excited to continue with us.  The classes are NOT a repeat of the fall session classes, but each returning class will be offering a new curriculum for the winter session.  We are also excited to again be offering the spring season of Girls on the Run.  This program is open to girls in 3rd-5th grades, with a start date in March.  Pending final approval, the schedule for the new session of after school programs is below:
